Mega interesting course where development of your practical skills and insights in setting up experiments is central and you contribute real-time to the knowledge about immunotherapy in medulloblastoma. The best course as a preparation to your master and to find out if doing research really suits you.

BRL Course Period 2, 2020-2021

Courses
COURSES

Participate in the Biomedical Research Lab (3rd year BMW; periods 1-3; 15 ECTS) or Experimental Translational Medicine (2nd year BMW & GNK; period 4; 15 ECTS) course, and gain realistic insights into the life of a biomedical researcher:

  • Work full-time for 10 weeks on a relevant research question or patient case originating from the UMC Utrecht in which patients are also often involved.

  • In subgroups, work together with a group of students on the same overall hypothesis using different perspectives and methodologies.

  • During the first two weeks, study the subject under the supervision of medical doctors and researchers and devise the research strategy. Then, conduct experiments for 6 weeks to answer this question. In the last two weeks, analyze and present the data and collectively write a single scientific article or report about it.

  • Conduct authentic and real-world biomedical research in small groups.

  • Work together with an interdisciplinary group (BMW & GNK) hands-on on an urgent medical need that directly promotes healthcare.

  • Develop new practical skills or enhance existing ones.

  • Every course edition the theme will change.

  • Register via Osiris for this course (15 credits).

BACHELOR THESIS
BACHELOR THESIS

Carry out the 10-week Research project (Bachelor thesis) of the Bachelor's degree program BMW (Research project and Research project plus):

  • Research project: Write a thesis and perform two weeks of practical work.

  • Research plus project: Write a thesis and perform seven weeks of practical work.

  • Work under the supervision of a research group.

  • For the practical part, work individually or in a small group (final thesis remains an individual assignment!).

  • You can find research projects or patient cases posted by researchers/medical doctors, for which you can apply at KonJoin. Choose ‘Bachelor Research Hub’ to filter relevant research projects. Alternatively, please contact us for Hub projects.

SUMMER SCHOOL
SUMMER SCHOOL

Join the Bachelor Research Hub Summer School and in a 2-week period work on an actual patient case with an unknown medical problem or on an ongoing translational medicine research problem:

  • Gain realistic insights into the life of a biomedical researcher.

  • Conduct authentic and real-world biomedical research in small interdisciplinary groups.

  • Develop new practical skills or enhance existing ones.

  • Work in an international environment.

  • Obtain Certificate of attendance at the end of the Summer School.

  • The theme will change on a yearly basis.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

In our dedicated and equipped laboratory space you can do authentic and current (ongoing) extracurricular research all year round under the supervision of experienced researchers. Research can be of different nature, such as fundamental, translational, clinical, epidemiological, but also diagnostic. Aside from the wet-lab research, you can work on cohort studies, (clinical) databases and data mining.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR
  • Work on the existing research (e.g. via KonJoin) or propose your own topic of interest.

  • Choose between wet- and dry-lab research, including cohort studies, database work and mining in big data.

  • Work on different types of research such as fundamental, translational, clinical, epidemiological, but also diagnostic.

  • Work individually or in a small group.

  • Develop academically, work on your practical skills, discuss and exchange ideas with other students/researchers.

  • No extra credits are available.

Bachelor Lab Continuum

In the Bachelor Research Hub, you can work throughout the year on the topic of interest, outside the regular courses:

  • Work on a topic for which you do not have time during the curricular courses.

  • Develop your practical skills and gain realistic insights into the life of a biomedical researcher.

  • Work in an international environment (during the Summer School).

  • Work individually or in a small group.

  • Certificate of attendance can be obtained (Honors EC), however no extra credits are available.

Bachelor Lab Summer Research

In the Bachelor Research Hub you can conduct extra-curricular research during the summer holidays:

  • Ongoing in parallel to the curricular course.

  • Gain in-depth knowledge on the specific topic or solve (small) problems.

  • Work individually or in a small group.

  • As an honors student, find extra depth within an ongoing course.

  • Certificate of attendance can be obtained (Honors EC), however no extra credits are available.

Bachelor Lab Co-curricular Research

During the curricular courses, you often work on a problem (research proposal, diagnostic, clinical, patient case), which sometimes raises additional questions and opens novel research paths. In the Co-Curricular Research Bachelor Lab, you have the opportunity to tackle these problems:
